Universal Labels (Pvt) Limited is a Board of Investment (BOI) approved Company with the classification of Indirect exporter in Sri Lanka. It is an extension of Unitag Industries Limited, established in 1979 with the manufacturing base in Maharagama which is just 15 Km away from Colombo, the country’s capital and commercial hub. Our plant is also in close proximity to reputed and small scale garment manufacturers based in industrial zones of Panadura, Homagama, Biyagama, Seethawaka and Kadawatha.

Our History
The roots of Universal Labels (Pvt) Ltd, dates back over three decades when the present directors of the Company established a woven label manufacturing facility in 1979, under the name and style of “Unitag Industries Limited”. The label weaving machinery in use during that era was shuttle looms with a laced punched card system for designs.
The Company started commercial production in January 1980 using four color multi shuttle looms imported from Japan, and under the guidance of a Japanese expert who provided specialized training in label design and narrow fabric weaving technology.
By 1984, the label weaving technology had advanced with the introduction of compact, high-speed automatic needle looms and continuous laminated punched paper for the design system. To keep up with the new trend, Unitag invested in needle looms from the United Kingdom, and subsequently more of the same type from Taiwan. The Company was fortunate to have on-site training on operation and maintenance of the new machines from both British and Taiwanese technicians.
Our Fabric Label printing division is equipped with new rotary printing machines which can print wash care labels up to 4 colors on the front surface of the label and 2 colors on the reverse on various types of Polyester satin, Cotton, Acetate or Nylon Taffeta tapes. We use high quality inks with color fasteners that could withstand numerous washes. Thereafter labels are finished using ultrasonic, heat or cold cut options depending on specific requirements of the customer.
Our Offset printing division is able to cater to a variety of hang tags, swing tickets with variable data which could be printed on different kinds of art board in multiple colors, sizes and shapes. We can accommodate different finishes with lamination, UV Varnish etc. We also cater to sticker labels printed with sizes for hangers, or poly bag / carton etc. with variable data. We also have the facility to produce bar-code labels to meet customer requirements.
The company made steady progress with the introduction of additional machinery and equipment to increase the production output of the facility. The organization’s strong focus on quality and service excellence provided us with a steady and loyal customer base and a reputation as a dependable supplier of apparel labels.
With the rapid growth of the apparel industry in Sri Lanka, the Company was under pressure from customers for larger and speedier volumes of labels. Thus in 1995, the management taking advantage of the many concessions and facilities offered by the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (B.O.I) for investments in advanced technology, took the bold step of forming a new facility “Universal Labels (Pvt) Limited, as successor to Unitag Industries Ltd.
Our team of talented designers utilizes design systems from Müller and MEI to develop intricate designs or convert from art work or samples to bring the designs of customers to life in woven form. We have been able to successfully developed and supply woven labels for globally recognized brands due to our attention to detail and quality and quick response to client requests.
